Iowa Public Transit Association

Iowa is served by 35 public transit systems that provide local transit services open to the public in all parts of the state. There are 19 urban public transit systems and 16 regional public transit systems. Urban systems provide scheduled route service and ADA paratransit service in larger Iowa communities. Most regional systems offer demand responsive transit services over a multi-county area outside the larger communities. Transit systems work with human service agencies, and others, to provide coordinated service for transportation in their areas.

Office 0f Public Transit

Iowa's transit history dates back to the first half of the 19th Century when keel boats and stage coaches began offering intercity travel opportunities between Iowa communities. Local transit services started in the second half of that century. Along the way Iowa has had one of the first electrified trolley systems in the nation and one of the first elevated street railways. The following pages tell the general history of transit in Iowa, as well as presenting local histories from the following communities around the state: Ames, Region 1.
